Poverty Reduction Strategy

The District of West Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, Squamish Nation, and Tsleil-Waututh Nation are working together to create a Poverty Reduction Strategy for the North Shore.

With financial support from provincial grant funding, the three North Shore municipalities and two partner First Nations have kicked off this initiative to understand what is needed to thrive together on the North Shore.

This important initiative builds from TogetherBC, British Columbia’s first Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Please join us via Zoom for a virtual workshop on Thursday, April 28 from 6 to 8 p.m., to discuss the North Shore's first Poverty Reduction Strategy. Register in advance.

What is the purpose of this?

The consequences of poverty affect everyone. Tell us about what you need to go from surviving to thriving and we can help build a better community for everyone. This project is about creating a North Shore that lifts people up and breaks the cycle of poverty.

What are we focusing on?

Poverty is complex. The provincial Poverty Reduction Strategy has four guiding principles: affordability, opportunity, reconciliation, and social inclusion. Tell us about your experiences with these issues. Can you afford adequate housing, child care, and other support services? Do you have opportunities to learn new skills so that you can reach your potential? Have you experienced discrimination because of your identity? Do you feel like you belong on the North Shore? What else?

What prevents you from participating in the activities you need or want to do? What experiences are hard or stressful for you or someone you know? What do you need to feel more connected to your community?

This will be the first Poverty Reduction Strategy prepared for the North Shore!
